A boat with a skipper, hired whole, for a stretch of hours you choose. Most of them here are gozzi — the broad-beamed wooden launches the island has always used — and a few are motor yachts. Nobody else comes aboard, the route is agreed rather than printed, and the swim stops go where the water is good that morning rather than where the timetable says.
The important structural fact is the price basis. Ten of these are sold per boat, and that changes how you should read the numbers.
A charter at $398 for four is roughly $100 a head. At six or eight aboard, several of these come in below the per-person fare of a shared boat, with the boat to yourselves. Divide before you dismiss.
Four of these are sold by duration — one hour, two, three, four, six — so a charter fits a tender window as easily as a full day. No shared boat on the island offers that.
Your skipper will swap a stop for a longer swim, wait while you eat ashore, or work round a closed Blue Grotto. Travellers on four different charters have described exactly that happening.
Towels, snorkelling gear, soft drinks and a Bluetooth speaker are standard, and the swim stop is usually off the Faraglioni or in the water below Marina Piccola. The other difference is what you can be told on the day. A shared boat runs its published route whatever your party wants. A charter's route is a conversation, and on an island where the cave can be closed by lunchtime that is worth something.
Ask for the total. Fuel, docking and government fees sit outside the headline on several of these, and they are paid in cash on the day. The listings state them; the price you first see does not include them.
Board at the home port. Every supplement here is triggered by boarding somewhere else. If you are already on the island, look for the charters that start at Marina Grande.
Pick the length honestly. Two hours does the coastline. Three adds a proper swim. Six or eight buys time ashore, and on the mainland departures a good deal of the day is the crossing.
